Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
I would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the fantastic activities and areas of study that our 5 and 6 year old children enjoy.
During Year 1, the children will enjoy a range of texts in English which are brought to life through drama, SPaG and writing sessions. In addition, they continue to build their phonics knowledge which supports both their reading and spelling. In Maths, the children will develop their knowledge and understanding of numbers to 100, shape, space and measure and apply this to a variety of problem solving and reasoning activities. In Science, they develop their investigation skills by learning about properties of materials, as well as investigating what plants need to grow and survive. In History, we study ‘The History of Our School’, ‘The History of Toys’ and ‘The Seaside’ where the children begin compare this learning to the present day. They travel around the World in our Geography lessons where we study: ‘The Countries of the UK’, Human and Physical Features, including Japan’ and ‘Routes and Maps’. In Year 1, we use a range of digital resources to teach the children how to code such using the Beebots. In addition, the children will gain experience of using a range of programmes such as: Microsoft Word and PowerPoint as well as Google Safe Search to further develop and enhance their computing skills.
A selection of the workshops and trips planned for this academic year will help to bring all of this learning to life. This Autumn, the children will take part in a workshop called ‘Discover Your Body’ led by the drama group, Perform. In the Spring term, to support our learning about life in the past, the children will visit Milestones Museum. To support our topic on Christianity the children will visit St Martins Church on Bourne Green as well as visiting Painshill in the Summer term to support our Science topic: ‘Plants’. Throughout the year, the children will also take part in several dance, music and drama workshops, so watch this space! One of the highlights of the year is our themed day where the children bring their Geography learning on Japan to life.
Please do not hesitate to contact myself or your child's class teacher with any queries throughout the year. Thank you for visiting our page and hope you enjoy seeing what an exciting time we have in Year 1.
